HOURS AFTER HE’D left Piper, Logan sat in the fire-lit den at Darkhaven, staring into his half empty whisky glass. He’d never come as close to hating himself as he did at this precise moment.

The memory of Piper’s stricken expression haunted him. He downed the rest of the whisky in one swallow and rose to pour himself another. He pulled the stopper from the decanter … paused … and then put it back again.

Oh yeah, getting drunk makes such good sense.

It solved nothing

He’d tried to find forgetfulness in the bottom of a glass in the past, only to end up with hellacious hangovers. He walked over and flipped on the light, a move that did little to ease his turmoil or regret.

How could I have said such hurtful things to Piper?

Once again, he’d blown it—big time.

Why could he never get it right? Years ago he’d been no more unsuccessful—that scene as vivid now as it ever was…
